William has decided it just isn't time to come out of the oven yet. Physically, I'm fine with that. Anyone who knows I'm overdue marvels at my size- or lack there of. The challenge now is mentally maintaining composure.
A few years back Steve and I participated in the
Tour de Tahoe (an organized 72 mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe) . We drove the route the night before creating a mental bearing and noting where the going would probably get tough. As we neared the end of the ride, I thought the finish line was significantly closer and began to allow myself to charge forward. Then I realized there was an additional ten miles left. My heart sank and each movement was a painful movement of concerted dedication. Mentally I lost my vision and though I am proud that I finished the ride, it was a mental battle to the end.
Mentally I'm back on the Tour de Tahoe hanging on. I tried to not get "locked-in" to a specific somewhat arbitrary date, but at some point during the past 40 weeks, I honed in on that date. Perhaps it was telling so many kind inquisitive people when my due date was? I suppose that I honestly didn't think I'd be carrying this baby past my due date because all but one pregnant woman I know who have delivered this year have delivered early.
Fortunately, I have the number one most caring and honorable husband coupled with incredible friends! Steve has been bounding with grace, kindness, love and encouragement. My friends have been making a concerted effort to keep me occupied during the day and spending time talking about things other than the fact that I'm pregnant and overdue. Now, it's my job to battle the anxiety that creeps in during the wee hours of the morning.
As per a course of action... we've been trying to prepare mentally for the twists and turns that will happen during labor and delivery, but I know I wasn't prepared for facing some of these decisions prior to even going into labor. Typically I'm the textbook patient, but we've been thrown our first curve ball. My doctor's position on overdue patients is to allow them to go a week and a half beyond their due date. Thus, a week from today, in theory, we'll welcome William into the world. We'll see what God has in mind!
